DZO JONGO PEAK EXPEDITION

The journey leads hikers to three high passes in the Ladakh province, which is another significant attraction. Each of the three passes—Shiul, Chak, and Kongmaru La—is higher than 5000 metres. Trekkers have a one-of-a-kind chance on this walk to cross these passes and see the untamed Markha Valley.

About the event

                                                                              ABOUT THIS EXPEDITION

Dzo Jongo Peak, a hidden gem and emerging trekking destination, is gradually gaining popularity. Situated in the vicinity of Kang Yatse peaks 1, 2, and 3, this beautiful valley harbors the lesser-known Dzo Jongo Peak, standing at an impressive height of 6240 meters, slightly taller than Stok Kangri. Unlike the challenging ascent of Kang Yatse 2, this climb is characterized by a long and steep route, making it an excellent alternative to Stok Kangri.

Located near the Kang Yatse summits at the head of the Markha Valley, Dzo Jongo has two difficult and steep peaks. While there are multiple routes to reach the summit, the most popular one is the Markha Valley route from Skui, following the footsteps of the Kang Yatse expedition. However, our preference is the route from the Lato side, a renowned settlement along the Manali-Leh highway.

Reaching the summit of Dzo Jongo offers awe-inspiring panoramic views of the distant Karakoram Mountains, Kang Yatse Peaks, Changtang Valley Mountains, and Stok Kangri Peak. Along the route, trekkers encounter three challenging high passes—Shiul, Chak, and Kongmaru La (all above 5100 meters). While physically demanding, these passes are relatively less frequented on typical hikes. From Kongmaru La pass, trekkers can enjoy the greener side of the Markha Valley.

Although Dzo Jongo Peak is not technically difficult, the steep ascent requires the use of crampons and ropes, making it suitable for experienced climbers, similar to Stok Kangri. For those seeking a fantastic opportunity to tackle a 6000-meter peak without excessive exertion, Dzo Jongo is an ideal choice. It also serves as a valuable stepping stone for those preparing for more significant climbing adventures.
