The campsite is a 30-minute walk away. Be careful on paths as they are frequently used by yaks and mules. Keep to the mountainside so that the animals have room to pass. Tents are allowed in the Sachen campground because it is located in a forest. Meals: All meals included Accommodation: Camp Meal Plan : B L D The walk from Yuksom to Sachen/Bakhim takes between 5 and 6 hours (Sachen) and 8 and 9 hours (Bakhim) (Bakhim). This journey has a lot of difficult inclines to climb, especially if you want to ascend Bakhim. You should bring around 2 litres of water with you; you will encounter streams that you may later use to replenish your bottles. About 30 minutes into the route, you can see a shelter on the way; this is the precise location of the bridge that spans Pha Khola. After traversing this deep, dark jungle for this length of time, you will come to a shelter. Pha Khola is a dense forest with a wide variety of plants and animals that will envelop you. The forest has a chill atmosphere, and as you emerge from the shade of the protected branches, the temperature changes. The path progressively ascends. You will start to witness stunning waterfalls known as the Tshushay Khola Falls after another hour and a half of trekking. A robust iron bridge that will lead you farther into the walk can be seen around 50–60 metres in front of you. After another hour of walking, you will come upon a short cement bridge that is around 30 minutes away from Sachen and has a height of roughly 7,100 feet. Once you get to Sachen, you will discover a log cottage with a few rooms for travellers (about 6-7 people) and a tiny kitchen. For bigger parties, there is a campground across from the shelter where you may take a nap in the open.

You will always be surrounded by lovely air and overhanging trees as you climb through deep oak forests, which are a delight to travel through. Rhododendrons will begin to appear 30 minutes into the forest, illuminating it with their beauty and colour. You'll notice that the air gets colder and thinner as you gain height. The route will ascend to a ridge and continue till it reaches Bhakim. There is a forest rest house in Bhakim since some tourists choose to stop there for a bit before continuing on their journey because of the famed and stunning Yuksom valley and the breath-taking view it offers from the Bhakim range. Though it will be difficult to get a caretaker, you might choose to trek the hour-long route to Tshoka instead. After a little pause in Bhakim, you'll locate a tea shop where you can also get some snacks. From here, you'll start the long climb to Tshoka, which will involve many climbs and offer you a view of Bhakim. The route will get gloomy as the forests become denser at around 9,000 feet, with rhododendrons all around the forest, since the canopy of trees will hide the sunshine and create a dark atmosphere. After a bit of trekking, you will emerge from the forest's cover onto a plateau and arrive at the campground of Tshoka. Here, there is a cabin as well as a camping area to accommodate all types of travellers. Up to 20 trekkers can stay in the hut, which is a construction entirely built of wood. In addition, a woodland rest house is nearby and somewhat uphill from the hut where you can spend the night as well. Tshoka is a fantastic site to explore. You can discover local cafés that serve a malt beer called Tumba, and you can also go to the adjacent monastery to see the region's spiritual aspect. A monastery is a peaceful setting where you may escape the rush of city life and discover only tranquillity all around you. Tshoka is home to a fairly small population, hence there is often constant calmness all across the area. The Kanchenjunga peaks are more beautiful than Tshoka; you can see them closer, and the snow on the summits offers a wonderful sight of the landscape that is quite breath-taking. Additionally, Mt. Pandim dominates a significant portion of the skyline. You may ascend a bit higher to obtain the finest photo results and take stunning panoramic pictures of the various peaks in the region.

Day 7

TSHOKA – PHEDANG (10500 ft) - DZONGRI (12980 ft)

Altitude: Phedang at 10500 ft and Dzongri at 12980 ft. Trekking Distance: 9 km, approx 7 hours The Tsokha to Phedang track is 4.5 km long and takes 3 hours to complete, as is the Phedang to Dzongri trek. The route is rocky for the first hour, then wooden for two hours before returning to being rocky and zigzagging to the camp spot. Carry packed lunch and enough water as there are no sources of drinking water en-route Meal Plan : B L D Accommodation: Camping The dame monastery will be your next stop; continue on the route in that direction. On the way, there are some difficult rises, and soon Tshoka will be lost from view. Rhododendrons will surround you as you enter a forest, illuminating the path with their vivid colours. The entire hill is covered in vivid rhododendrons in May, which creates a flaming impression. The climb starts challenging but eases into a manageable ascent after around 30 minutes. This road turns into a wooded one, and wooden benches are lined up on each side of the trail. The area starts to resemble a park, and you feel the want to take it all in at this very moment. Additionally, the road is filled with the lovely fragrance of the forest, flowers, and trees. The lengthy, gravel road is simple to ascend despite having a slight incline, and it takes only 20 minutes to get to Phedang. The snow-capped mountains may be seen in all their glory from Phedang, where there are also shelters and wooden chairs. You depart for Kockchurang after lunch to continue your tour. After 15 minutes, Spring will arrive, where you may replenish your bottles and continue your ascent to Dzongri. The path will begin to brush off, with little rhododendrons covering it. The next difficult climb goes through a ridge and alternates between either side of the hill. You will start to notice the prayer flags lighting up as you climb to the peak after approximately an hour. Before beginning the descent towards Dzongri, you might stop by and receive blessings at a nearby shrine that many tourists visit. The Dzongri hut, which can accommodate 30 trekkers at once, is located at a curve and has a creek running alongside it. The view here is so breath-taking that people frequently remain here and return from here alone. Dzongri is a large meadow with peaks surrounding you. You can see the Kanchenjunga peak and other peaks that are wrapped in glittering snow.

Day 8

REST DAY IN DZONGRI

Meal Plan : B L D Accommodation: Camp Today is a rest day at Dzongri top. Here, we'll unwind, hang around, and go on a quick acclimatisation trek. Day 9

DZONGRI – KOKCHURANG (12000 ft)– THANSING (12900 ft)

Altitude: Kokcharang at 12,000ft, Thansing at 12900. Trekking Distance: 10 km, approx 6 hrs. Trek from Dzongari to Kokcharang (8 km; 4 hrs). Take a break before starting the 2 km ascent to Thansing. Enjoy a hot meal while camping. Meal Plan : B L D Accommodation: Camp Like other routes in Sikkim, this one is lined with lovely rhododendrons that bloom along the way with their vivid colours and fascinating patterns. It takes around two hours to descend, and it is a pretty moderate descent. Rhododendrons that were once distributed in the form of bushes have developed into full-fledged forests, clearing the way for your sight. The fall will become steeper and more challenging in the forest, so take extreme care. If you have the time and patience, you may see a lot of birds in this forest and snap their pictures as well. The birds are completely camouflaged by the trees and rocks, so it will take some time to distinguish the bird from its natural environment. There is a lovely spring nearby named Kockchurang spring, and from there you may take a path into the forest, which will take you to Phedang. Although you can't put up your tent at Kockchurang, there is a river 100 metres away where trekkers typically stop for the night. The weather and the river combined provide an excellent camping experience for the trekkers. You must cross Prekchu by bridge from Kockchurang, where you may explore and breathe the natural air. You can see the river, which is flowing in subfreezing conditions, as well as the open space below the bridge. The environment between Thansing and the bridge, which is 2 km away, goes from being covered in deep trees to its extreme opposite, which is rocky and desolate. When you arrive in Thansing, you will see a large, open meadow and a trekkers cabin that is located in the meadow. However, since you cannot live in the hut, tents have to be installed.

As you cannot remain close to Lake Samiti, you must go back and spend the night in the Lamuney campground, which is equally charming with open pastureland and a nice breeze that will soothe your nerves from city life. You will be instructed about the significant day that will take you to your last destination, Goecha La, and you should also consider relaxing and recharging yourself for the following day.

You'll set up a makeshift tent for a brief stop, where you can eat your packed lunch, take a little sleep, explore the area, and take pictures—or you can just sit back and take in the tranquility of the surrounding landscape as the cold air caresses your face. You begin the final leg of your journey to Tshoka once everyone has had time to rest, recharge, and feel fully restored. It will take around 6 kilometres to get from Phedang to Tshoka; the route is still flanked by expansive, dense rhododendron trees, giving the impression that you are travelling on an uninhabited planet identical to Earth. There will be some challenging descents, so it is advisable to move slowly and cautiously. However, if you get to a stable area, try to take fewer rests to arrive at Tshoka before it becomes dark. Once you get to Tshoka, dinner will be provided, and everyone will head home to recover and get ready for the following day.

As you go downhill, the journey also gets quicker. The mighty Himalayas will also display their splendour even from this location; they will follow you on your walk like a stationary background. When travelling back to Yuksom from Sachen, you will pass through a town called Bhakim as well as an uneven landscape with many ups and downs and zigzag roads in between. The last stretch also has a few tough hills. The last obstacle of the journey will be Hillock; after you get over it, the journey will be finished, and you'll be standing in the Yuksom region. When you return to civilization, cellular phone networks will be available, allowing you to inform your loved ones of the trek's accomplishment. When you're ready to say goodbye to Sikkim, you may settle down at the guest home, take a revitalising bath, catch up on some sleep, and relax. However, those who still choose to remain in Sikkim for a time may go sightseeing, learn about the rich culture, try local food, and purchase handicrafts made in the region. If you have the time, you should visit a Sikkim monastery to see the region's spiritual side. To keep the adventure, the beauty of the trek, and Sikkim itself in your memory, you might hunt for modest presents and mementoes to bring for your loved ones and one for yourself. This is undoubtedly one of the Himalayas' most breath-taking hikes, and it also provides you with the chance to travel to Sikkim. This walk will leave you with much more than just mountains and camping; it will also leave you with some priceless experiences and lessons that you will treasure always.

Day 14

YUKSOM - NEW JALPAIGURI

Driving Distance: 150 Km, about 8 hours. Depart Yuksom early in the morning and arrive at NJP around 5:00 pm. Pack your bag at night to avoid having to hustle before departing for NJP. Dinner - Breakfast and Lunch Accommodation: Hotel The last day of the trip is when you get ready to leave Sikkim, therefore you should set off early because you have a long and grueling drive ahead of you. You start your day by seeing Yuksom's stunning sunrise while breathing in the crisp, clear air. Along with it, you pack your belongings before leaving for a leisurely breakfast in the morning. It would be best to leave around 8 am to go to New Jalpaiguri Railway Station before sunset. The complete driving distance from Yuksom may be reached in 8 to 9 hours, depending on traffic, the weather, and the road conditions. Since Sikkim is prone to landslides, many roads and bridges are still under construction. The drive back to Jalpaiguri by car will be just as thrilling as your stay in Yuksom since the Himalayas will remain fastened to your car window and the picturesque country life will pass you by as you go. You will stop for lunch at Jorthang, where you may choose from a variety of cuisines, including Chinese, Indian, continental, and Sikkim specialities. The stop is brief since you still need to make it to your train, so you promptly go on with your journey. You should schedule an onward journey that might depart a few hours after your estimated time of arrival because the travel time is not fixed and there is always a chance that you won't make it to Jalpaiguri on time. If you don't want to take a chance, you may even reserve tickets for the next day because trains aren't always running at night. Jalpaiguri is a well-known district in West Bengal; once you are there and have some free time, you should surely explore it. It has a very well-known market there called Hong Kong Market that absolutely must be on your list; it's just around 4 kilometres from the train station. Frequently Asked Questions

How challenging is the Goechala Trek?

Expert trekkers rate the Goechala Trek's difficulty as challenging due to its lengthy hiking days and steep elevation. As a result, the trekkers must be physically fit and have a high level of endurance. Only hikers with some prior high-altitude hiking experience should attempt it.

When is the best time to go on the Goechala Trek?

The spring months of March and April are known for their flowering rhododendrons and unique bird species. This season is the finest time for the Goechala Trek since the temperatures are ideal and range from 15°C to -3°C throughout this period. But there's always the threat of sporadic downpours and murky skies filled with clouds. From late September to early November, the weather suddenly becomes colder, with temperatures ranging from -5°C to -10°C. In the fall, you may enjoy daytime with a clear, blue sky that is excellent for taking pictures.

Where is the starting point for the Goechala Trek?

The Goechala Trek's trailhead is located in Yuksom, a Sikkim town, which is eight hour drive from Bagdogra Airport. From Kolkata City, you may take a domestic flight on Indigo Airline or SpiceJet for one hour to go to Bagdogra.

How to get to the Base Camp?

You must first travel to Yuksom in Sikkim before you can reach Goechala. Your journey begins and finishes right here. The distance between Yuksom and the West Bengal tri-junction of Siliguri, New Jalpaiguri (NJP), and Bagdogra is around 150 kilometres.

The largest city in the region is Siliguri, which also has an airport in Bagdogra and a railway station called NJP. Siliguri is about 10 kilometres from the airport and the train station.

NJP, Siliguri, and Bagdogra are all accessible by train or air. Where you reach depends on how you come.

About the Trek

The treks in Sikkim's Eastern Himalayas are well-known for their views of snow-capped mountains, glacier passes, and lakes as well as their subtropical temperature and wildlife. Among experienced trekkers, the path to Goechala is one of the most well-liked.

The height of the Goechala Trek exceeds 4572 metres. Passing through dense alpine flora, you arrive at a rugged, uneven environment that embraces the very cold air at such tremendous altitudes. The Kanchenjunga National Park is one of the trail's high points. A trip through the Kanchenjunga National Park is distinguished by beautiful sunrises over the mountain range, lovely glades, an alpine lake, and a vast number of blossoming plants that are abundant in the highland woods.

The Goechala trek is not an easy one, in comparison to other well-known treks in the Eastern Himalayas. This trek has been rated as demanding by experts, so trekkers must be prepared for all difficulties.

Starting from Yuksom (1780 metres), the walk to Goechala takes around 11 days, and the path travels 90 kilometres to return to the starting site. Although it takes longer to get to the actual Goechala Pass, trekking past Viewpoint 1 is now prohibited.

The traditional route goes on to the Goechala Lake, referred to as Viewpoint 2, before ascending to the Goechala Pass at Viewpoint 3. These are considerably further up, at a height of 4907 metres. The walk, however, was restricted to Viewpoint 1 starting in the spring of 2017 because of occasional sightings of the wild snow leopard at Viewpoint 2.

From Viewpoint 1, you may get the closest look at Mt. Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world (8586 metres). The Goechala trek is sometimes contrasted with the highest treks in Nepal in terms of the degree of difficulty and difficulties present.
